Children Literature Museum is a real fairy tale house, where every corner hides stories, books come to life, and fairy tale characters invite you to play.

Visitors are greeted by antique printing machines in the lobby. Around the corner is a diorama created by artist Marius Jonutis – like an old-fashioned cinema, with children’s stories preserved on rolls of canvas. An ancient gate hangs on a huge window, leading to Julius Kaupas’ fairy tale „Daktaras Kripštukas pragare“. When you open the gate, one door after another opens into the spaces of the fairy tale – from the stained glass windows of Kaunas Town Hall to the basements of an old, uninhabited house, where, it turns out, hell is located with all its attributes – boiling cauldrons, fogged mirrors, and black candles in silver candlesticks. Here, the liberator is awaited by Čičiukas, the apothecary who was kidnapped by the devils.

Are you tired? Make yourself comfortable on the beanbags scattered in front of a small stage, where you, our welcome visitors, will be able to create performances during the educational sessions. And that’s not all! In one corner, behind a creaking door, a spaceship from Vytautė Žilinskaitė’s fairy tale “Kelionė į Tandadriką” awaits. In the educational classroom, you will meet Dominykas the horse, who has come straight out of Vytautas V. Landsbergis’ books, and the mischievous Gile from Vytautas Petkevičius’ short story “Gilės nuotykiai Ydų šalyje” The wooden Land of Ydos was created by artist Marius Jonutis.

In the basement, you will find a unique educational space – the “Būtybių tyrinėtojos kambariai” You will be introduced to the world and incredible discoveries of Emilija Gruodytė, a fictional scientist created by writer Kotryna Zylė. Emilija has found evidence that various mythical creatures actually existed and still live among us today! In her rooms, you will find a bogeyman’s nail, a troll’s footprint, a dragonfly egg, and the sunflower of the goddess Žemyna – these are just a few of the exhibits awaiting brave explorers!

Courage – that’s what you’ll need to climb the narrow stairs to the museum’s attic. Here you will listen to horror stories, read forbidden books, write personal stories, delve into the mysterious depths of an old wooden wardrobe, try your hand at playing book characters, and meet Modris Tenisonas – an extraordinary man who dared to be different. You can expect experiences and activities that will give you goosebumps, but we promise that it will not only be scary, but also fun, interesting, and useful!
